SNAP Policy

Hunger Action Month

New Jersey SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) has work requirements and time limits that apply to some adults without dependents (ABAWDs) who receive benefits. The rules have been “waived” for several years, but starting in 2016, the rules will apply to many counties.

The resources below will aid in understanding the changes, as well as providing your clients with information to adjust. Don’t give up! Clients can still be eligible for SNAP benefits with your help in navigating the changes.

When will the changes take effect in my county?

Are there flyers and information to help me understand exceptions and screen clients?

Yes. Legal Services of New Jersey has several flyers and a screening tool.

In addition to these tools, Legal Services also provides a Statewide Client Hotline, at 1-888-LSNJLAW (1-888-576-5529) for legal advice, information and referrals.

The Department of Labor also has an ABAWD website. This includes contact information to help clients find a work activity.
